ABN and GST Registration and other Taxation in Australia



Taxation, ABN and GST Registration in Australia is conducted through the Australian Taxation Office.

Everyone who operates a home business must register for an ABN (Australian Business Number). Registering for an ABN and for GST for Sole traders and partnerships can very easily be done online through www.ato.gov.au

When in the website go to the option "Apply for an ABN, TFN, or other registration.
Choose Option 1 apply online.

If you are setting up a PTY Ltd or Trust company structure, your accountant will usually do your ABN Registration and also register for GST.

When you register for an ABN, you must decide whether to register for GST.

You must register for GST if you are carrying on a business or enterprise, and:

* your current or projected GST turnover is $75,000 or more ($150,000 or more for non-profit organisations)
* you provide taxi travel, or

If your GST turnover is below $75,000, you may choose to register for GST. As soon as you realise that your current or projected GST turnover is $75,000 or more, you have 21 days to register for GST.

If you elect not to register for GST, you must make it very clear on your invoices and receipts that you are providing a GST Free Service/Item. See our Bookkeeping Module for more information on Invoicing.

Now you have registered your Business Name, Your ABN & GST Registration is complete, and you have completed registering your business.

Now you are registered for GST and PAYGW, you must lodge your Business Activity Statements on the due date.
